Facilities and Resources

¡@¡@NIU meets the academic needs of its faculty and students by constantly enriching and upgrading its facilities. Campus-wide, over 150 laboratories are maintained by individual departments. The labs are equipped with state-of-the-art equipments and are listed in the department web pages.

¡@¡@Three computer-controlled language labs are used for general language teaching. A US$9-million project to build Library and Information Center is now under way. When completed in 2004, the center will meet faculty and students' computing and information needs.

Cooperative Programs

¡@¡@Acting as a liaison between its faculty and the communities it serves, NIU places great emphasis on its cooperative programs. Through these programs, faculty members combine theories with practice. Their professional expertise is used to help the industries and local communities in terms of personnel training, technology research and development, extension education and consulting. The following list includes offices involved and activities and services provided.

Research and Development Office

¡@¡@The Office of Research and Development provides administrative services to foster and sustain an environment that facilitates research. It assists faculty with grant application and project execution. Sources of funding have included National Science Council, Agricultural Council, Ministry of Education, local and the central governments, and other public and private organizations. As NIU aims to transform itself into a leading university in Taiwan, faculty research is becoming the focus of institutional development. A special NIU fund is set aside to help junior faculty members with starting up their research.

Experimental Center

¡@¡@In addition to serving campus-wide teaching, the Experimental Center provides experimental services to the public. It conducts projects commissioned by public and private organizations in connection with the testing of water, soil, air pollutants, solid waste, concrete, steel material and wood material. Other work performed by the Center includes personnel training, research in testing technology, consulting and execution of cooperative projects.

Computing Center

¡@¡@In cooperation with the faculty members from various departments, the Computing Center has provided in-service training for employees from public and private organizations in areas such as office automation, word processing, and applications of computer software. Its clients have included the Training Center of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, Taiwan Electricity Corporation, and Lo-Tung Forestry Management Office.

Agricultural Propagation Committee

¡@¡@The NIU Agricultural Propagation Committee provides service to farmers in I-Land and Hwa-Lian counties. Its committee members counsel them on animal and plant breeding and management of agricultural businesses; participate in seminars and meetings held by local farmers' associations; hold regular meetings and publish brochures to disseminate new information; and provide new information and technology to agricultural propagation staff at all levels.

Continuing Education

¡@¡@The Continuing Education office offers degree and non-degree programs in the evening for adult students' continuing educational needs. Currently about 800 students are enrolled in 6 departments in the degree programs. The enrollment for the non-degree program varies every semester. It has had over 2,500 participants. Current enrollment is about 200.

Professional Certification
Official testing site

¡@¡@The Research and Development office is actively engaged in getting the school as an official testing site for various professional certifications. We are now the official testing site for certification in computer software applications (Classes II, III), computer software designs (Classes II, III), computer hardware assembly (Classes II, III), land surveying (Classes II, III), engineering surveying (Class II), and sewerage maintenance -- water quality (Class II). In cooperation with the departments, the Research and Development office has held certification tests in all of the above areas. In 1998, the office was awarded Excellence in the Promotion of the Certification System by the Labor Committee of the Executive Yuan.

Getting NIU students certified

¡@¡@Throughout their years at NIU, our students are encouraged to obtain as many professional certificates and licenses as possible. Every year, the Research and Development office allocates funds for the departments to conduct hands-on training essential to certification. The number of students taking part in the tests has been increasing steadily in recent years.
