History
The school was founded on 12th May, 1926 in the original name of Taiwan Provincial Ilan School of Agriculture and Forestry. It was a five-year school providing only two areas of study: agronomy and forestry. The school was renamed Taiwan Provincial Ilan Agricultural Vocational School after the recovery of Taiwan from Japan's rule in 1945. The school then adopted the new 3-3 system comprising the junior and senior divisions. Later on, in 1948, this system was augmented to include the five-year program. Beginning in 1956 the junior division stopped admitting students. In 1967 engineering departments were established and the school was renamed Taiwan Provincial Ilan Senior Vocational School of Agriculture and Engineering. The five-year program was terminated in 1968. In August, 1983, vocational extension courses were set up, and one year later, the school became affiliated with the Senior Agricultural and Engineering Extension School.
In 1988, with the consent of the Ministry of Education, the school upgraded into a five-year junior college and was named National Ilan Institute of Agriculture and Technology. The Institute began admissions in 1989, and in 1992, it established the two-year day and evening programs. In July, 1998, the school was again renamed National Ilan Institute of Technology, and upgraded to a polytechnic college offering bachelor degrees in engineering, agriculture, humanities and management. The preparatory office of Ilan University started working from June, 2002. In August, 2003, the school became National Ilan University, the only national university in Ilan county.
