Library

History

The NIU library was built in 1987 to meet the teaching needs of the then Taiwan Provincial I-Lan Senior Vocational School of Agriculture and Engineering with an expected collection size of 30,000 and seating for 2000. As the school underwent major upgrading twice in the past decade and a proposal for another upgrading is under way, the library has transformed itself into one of the major resource centers in Taiwan, with a collection of over 184,996 books, subscription to 807 printed periodicals and magazines, over 4000 electronic journals and 30 major databases such as SDOS, IEL and EBSCOHost.

¡@¡@As NIU transforms itself into a major educational institution in eastern Taiwan, a new 6-story Library and Information Center is now under construction to better serve users' information needs in both traditional and electronic forms. In addition to carrels, study rooms, an A/V room, internet-ready PCs, and other standard library amenities, it will be equipped with an institution records room, a special collection room and a state-of-the-art conference facility, able to house about 300,000 volumes. The construction is to be completed by 2004.

Services

¡@¡@Currently the library staff is comprised of the director and his three teams: user service, technical service, and system information service. Much of the service can be obtained on-line. Users have access to major library collections in Taiwan and world-wide and may obtain interlibrary loans and services via the Internet. The library holds seminars throughout the year. Every year, a Library Week consisting of quizzes, movies and other activities is held to promote library awareness and library use. A library committee meeting is held to discuss issues related to library regulations and guidelines.
